REC Ya Shorts – Youth Film Festival @ Bellingen Mem Hall
September 15, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Are you ready, Bellingen? The final finalists’ screening for REC Ya Shorts 2017 is coming your way this Friday. And if last week’s event in Coffs was anything to go by, it’s going to be a hit! Check it out on NBN News CLICK HERE
Thanks to the support of Bellingen Shire Council, this event is FREE and open to the public. It marks the peak of the REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival, which since May has been travelling around regional NSW teaching film-making workshops and inviting short film entries from young people aged 12 to 25. You will see the cream of the crop of this year’s entries – including work by Bellingen locals as well as (for the first time!) entries from Dorrigo. Who will be the winner? What new films did last year’s Bello winners return with? Only one way to find out – come and celebrate the town’s extraordinary talent.
REC Ya Shorts has tripled in size since it began in 2015, and this year’s prize pool was worth a record $30,000. Run by Screenwave Australia and Headspace Coffs Harbour, the festival aims to nurture the next generation of regional film-makers and has a strong mental health message at its core. Audiences have been blown away by the quality and insight of this year’s films – which spanned satire and comedy, thriller and music video, documentary and covered social, political and emotional issues that matter to young people in regional NSW.
The night includes a screening of the top short films plus a selection of local work, followed by a prize presentation by mayor Dominic King.
Kate Howat, REC Ya Shorts artistic director, said the buzz of the screening tour nights really bring the spirit of the competition to life.
“Months of hard work, late night edits, loss of sleep…it’s totally all worthwhile once you see your film up on the big screen for the first time. It’s one of the best feelings in the world, when the first frame of your film appears and your friends and family start to cheer.”
Bellingen’s FREE screening is on Friday 15 September, 6pm for a 6.30pm start, Bellingen Memorial Hall, 35 Hyde Street, Bellingen.
