Identities: Who am I? – Waterfall Way Gallery
February 4 @ 10:00 am - February 28 @ 4:00 pmby donation
Our February exhibition is Identities: Who am I? Like Roberta Sykes’ moving poem of the same name, this exhibition grapples with issues of identity, perception, and race. It presents a series of portraits and figurative paintings by Tone Wieruszewski (1955-1987), a European who befriended members of the Bunjalung community. He deliberately avoided reworking an indigenous style, and instead drew on his own European roots. Inspired by Aboriginal and Japanese Zen cultures, these artworks reflect Wieruszewski’s efforts as an immigrant to respect and understand the Australian landscape, the Southern light, and the ancient culture of the Bunjalung Dreamtime. Several works were first exhibited at the Sydney Opera House in 1985. The collection has been generously loaned for exhibition by the Wieruszewski family, now resident in Dorrigo.
